UN Security Council issues statement on deteriorating security crisis in Somalia

UN Security Council members strongly condemned the terrorist attacks near Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport, and Beledweyne, on March 23, 2022, for which Al-Shabaab terror group claimed responsibility.

The blasts killed dozens of people and injured many more, including lawmaker Amina Mohamed, who was strongly involved in the Ikraan Tahliil case.

A statement from the United Nations Security Council expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

“Members of the Security Council underscore the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, and financiers of these terrorist acts accountable and bring them to justice,” The Security Council said in a statement.
The Security Council also urged all states, ‘in accordance with their obligations, international law and relevant Security Council resolutions to work actively with the Federal Government of Somalia and all other security agencies.

“Members of the Security Council reiterate that terrorism of all kinds and all forms is a serious threat to international peace and security. They affirm that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of the motive, the location, the time and the perpetrator,” The statement added.

Council members said they were concerned about Al-Shabaab’s threat to peace and security in Somalia and the region as a whole.

They urged Somali leaders to work together on key national issues, including the conclusion of the ongoing electoral process, the fight against terrorism and the response to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia.
