Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, responding to criticism from the Somali government and China over relations between Somaliland and Taiwan, said Somaliland could not force anyone to do what it wanted, accusing the Somali government of threatening war.

The Somaliland president accused the Somali government of waging war on Somaliland whenever Somaliland takes a step forward.

“You are aware of those who do control the government in Mogadishu and when Somaliland makes some progress, they fight the most,” said President Bihi.

The president said Somalia has threatened to wage war on Somaliland because of its ties with Taiwan.

Responding to a coalition of China and Somalia seeking to block Somaliland-Taiwan relations, the Somaliland president said Somaliland could not be coerced by anyone.

“The foreign minister was also talking to China. The Chinese came to us with their deputy ministers and we told them now that no one will be holding our necks, and they will not point us in the wrong direction,” said President Bihi.

The governments of China and Somalia are working together to undermine relations between Somaliland and Taiwan, two unrecognized republics. Their relationship, which emerged in 2020, has angered China and Somalia, both of which believe Somaliland and Taiwan are among their countries.
