Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry says he has survived an assassination attempt while attending the country’s Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.

A statement from Henry’s office said the assassination attempt was carried out by “bandits and terrorists” who tried to assassinate the prime minister while he was at a church in Gonaives, North Haiti. It took place on the occasion of the 218th anniversary of Haiti’s independence.

A video posted on social media showed Henry and his aides running into their vehicles, as gunmen opened fire outside the church.

Haitian media reported that the attack involved a gang. One person was killed and two others were injured during the attack.
