UNICEF has on Friday called for urgent action to address Somalia’s water needs and address the severe drought in Somalia.

Some 2.6 million people are facing water shortages due to severe drought conditions in Somalia, according to a UNICEF report.
“Water shortages and drought conditions have contributed to rising water prices leading to displacement, diarrhea and malnutrition in many parts of Somalia,” The statement said.

The regions most severely affected by the current drought in Somalia include Gedo, Bay, Bakool, Lower Juba, Galgadud, Mudug and parts of Bari, Nugal, Sool, Sanaag, Togdheer and Hiran regions.

The statement said more than 2 million people in 66 districts are in need of emergency water conservation services.

“Unless urgent improvements are made to sanitation and hygiene services, more than 3 million people will be in dire need by the end of March 2022 and will not have access to at least 45L of water per day,” according to UNICEF.
