A court martial has found five African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) soldiers from Uganda guilty of killing civilians in Goloweyn on 10th of August 2021.
Following a board of inquiry to investigate the allegations of civilian casualties, the Government of the republic of Uganda as the troop contributing country to which the implicated soldiers belong to has established a court martial in the Somali capital, Mogadishu to try the accused.
After thorough reviewal of all facts and witness statements, the court martial has found the soldiers guilty of killing the civilians.
Two of the soldiers were sentenced to death while the three others were sentenced to 39 years in prison.
The sentenced three soldiers will be repatriated from Somalia to Uganda to serve their sentences.
The special representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and head of AMISOM, Amb. Francisco Madeira thanked the Government of Uganda and and the Federal government of Somalia for their cooperation and support on the case.
Amb. Francisco Madeira said he deeply regrets the killings of civilians in Goloweyn, Somalia and expressed his and AMISOM condelences to the bereaved families for the tragic incident.
