Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for joint action to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccine worldwide, to recover from the epidemic.

Addressing the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, President Kenyatta said in his speech that he was inspired by the motto of the UN General Assembly this year.

He said Kenya mourns the loss of more than 5,000 Kenyans who lost their lives in the disaster earlier this week and the 4.7 million who died worldwide.

President Kenyatta said the devastating impact of Covid-19 on global travel, tourism, marketing, and investment, has caused a deep economic decline for nearly a century.

He said a successful recovery would require a credible global response, and the best way to build that confidence would be to make the Covid-19 vaccine available to the world equally.

Kenyatta said the international system was not functioning properly for all people and countries around the world, especially in the areas of free trade, manufacturing, production knowledge, money laundering and illegal weapons, and accused the Security Council of interfering and failed to deliver on their promise to address these challenges.

Next October, Kenya will take over the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council, and he said he would raise a number of key issues, as he becomes president of the Security Council.
