International community issues statement on Somali elections

The international community has welcomed the National Consultative Assembly meeting in Mogadishu on June 29th, which resulted in resolutions including a new election timetable.

A joint statement from the International Community stated that “Somalia’s international partners welcome the successful conclusion of the National Consultative Assembly on 29 June”.

They called on all stakeholders, including electoral authorities, to live up to their responsibilities and promises without delay.

The international community has encouraged Somali leaders to engage in regular dialogue and effective co-operation during the electoral process to resolve any issues that may arise.

The international community also welcomed the decision to halve the registration fee for female candidates, and urged Somali officials to ensure a 30 per cent quota for women.

The international community has also expressed its readiness to support Somalia.
