A statement from the United States Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the US was concerned about the strong showing of violent clashes in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, which is between the Federal Government and the forces loyal to the opposition.

The US State Department has called on all political parties in Somalia to exercise restraint and resolve their differences peacefully.

“Dialogue and consensus are the only ways to resolve electoral challenges, and we urge the parties to resume talks at once to reach an agreed path to the elections,” the statement said.

The United States has again threatened Somali officials with sanctions if the violence in Mogadishu is not avoided, according to a State Department statement.

“The United States is prepared to consider all available tools, including the arms embargo and visa restrictions, as part of efforts on those who derail the peace and stability in Somalia,” the US statement said.
