International partners supporting Somaliland have welcomed the announcement of the date for parliamentary and local council elections.
A statement from the British embassy yesterday signed by diplomats from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the European Union and the United States said the elections were a great opportunity for Somaliland and would reaffirm its democratic process.
“We commend the National Electoral Commission and the three political parties for successfully completing the efficient voter registration process. We welcome the September 3, 2020 pact signed by the three political parties to jointly “nominate 18 women candidates” and “three candidates from minorities” for parliamentary elections”, reads part of the statement.
The international community has provided the Electoral Commission with financial support for the voter registration phase and promised to further provide additional financial and practical support to the remaining levels of the electoral process.
