U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar has urged outgoing Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to step down as soon as possible to calm the country’s dangerous political tension.

Ilhaan, a Somali-American, is a member of the ruling Democratic Party and a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Farmajo has been out of office for a year. It is time for him to step down, so that the long-awaited elections can move forward, as soon as possible,” Said MP Ilhan Omar in a tweet.
US Congresswoman Ilhaan Omar’s remarks came as the United States announced last night that it would take action against those who pose a threat to peace in Somalia and strongly opposing President Farmajo’s dismissal of Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.

“The United States stands ready to take action against those who obstruct the peace process in Somalia,” The US State Department said in a statement.
“The wont support the suspension of Prime Minister Roble and it’s really worrying one and we support his efforts for a credible election process. All parties must refrain from any actions or writings that could worsen the situation,” The statement further said.

The United States has also said that the National Consultative Council meeting is urgently needed to expedite the electoral process in Somalia.
