Puntland opposition demands clarity on upcoming elections

Puntland opposition candidates are urging the regional parliament to abstain from any actions that could potentially incite a political and security crisis in the Puntland regional state of Somalia.

During their meeting in Garowe today the candidates expressed their lack of confidence in President Said Deni’s ability to hold one-person, one-vote elections on January 1, 2024. They believe that the president may be seeking to extend his tenure.

The hopefuls emphasized that President Deni should appoint the committee to select the upcoming lawmakers by the end of November, warning that they would take the initiative if this appointment did not occur.

The opposition group convened this meeting as President Said Deni returned to Garowe on Tuesday after an absence from the country for over a month. It is worth noting that President Deni, who has less than three months remaining in his term, remains steadfast in his commitment to conducting a one-person, one-vote election on January 8, 2024.
