Somali government forces have recaptured two villages in central Somalia after conducting a security operation over the past few hours.

According to Colonel Saney Abdulle, commander of the fourth battalion of the 27th division of the country’s armed forces, the forces have liberated Elbiyodyo and El Ali Hassan in the Galgadud region.

“During the operation, the group’s militants planted landmines on the busiest roads used by the residents of Galgadud and Middle Shabelle regions, which connect Wabho, Budbud, and Galcad,” said Colonel Saney Abdulle. The commander added that the military destroyed the positions of the al-Shabab group in the village of Elbiyodyo, which is under the Budbud area.

Last week, Somali government forces freed at least ten villages in the Gal’ad district. Federal Parliament Members Yasin Fareey and Hassan Husul, accompanied by military officers, inspected neighbourhoods within the Galcad district that government forces control.

The second phase of operations against the terrorist group al-Shabab is currently in progress in the Hiiraan and Galgadud regions, intending to liberate the remaining areas under the militants’ control.
