The Ugandan government, one of the countries contributing troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has sent more troops to Somalia as part of the ATMIS operation.
A farewell ceremony for the troops was held in Uganda attended by the Commander of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi and urged the troops to perform their duties effectively and prevent Al-Shabaab terror attacks.
“When you go to Somalia, make sure you come back safe and sound. Al-Shabaab poses a serious threat to you. You have to be very careful that they do not have the freedom to commit acts of terrorism,” Said Gen. Wilson Mbadi.
The new Ugandan contingent will play a key role in the ATMIS operation, in the fight against Al-Shabaab terror group.
The Ugandan government has at least 6,000 troops in Somalia and the deployment coincides with the 10-day transfer of AMISOM’s name to ATMIS on 31 March 2022.
