On the occasion of International Women’s Day which is marked globally on 8th March, the United Nations in Somalia has congratulated Somali women for their tireless efforts and tremendous contribution to the promotion of peace, political stability and development in the country.

“Somali women have shown courage, resilience and relentless determination to ensure gender equality and full participation of women in all walks of life,” said UN Special Representative to Somalia, James Swan.

“I commend the active role of Somali women and the ongoing campaign in the ongoing federal elections to achieve at least 30 percent quota for women. “Women’s representation can change Somali politics, making it more inclusive,” He added.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.’

As Somalia prepares for a new government, there is an opportunity to promote gender equality and strengthen women’s policy and leadership, peace and sustainable development.

“It is important that Somali women are given their fair share of political representation as well as economic and social development,” Mr Swan said.

“It is important that their performance is recognized and that they have a rightful place in the leadership and decision-making of peace and political processes”

The United Nations in Somalia acknowledges the tremendous efforts and support of Somali women over the years and urges all Somali stakeholders, especially the country’s leaders to ensure greater participation, voting and participation of women in all institutions at the national and regional levels.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world since 1975, to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This day marks the culmination of a campaign to promote gender equality.
