Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says foreign fighters have taken part in attacks by Tigray forces in recent days on towns in the Amhara region.

In a speech to senior government officials and broadcasted live on television, Abiy Ahmed, who appeared to be talking about the capture of Tigray by key forces in the key cities of Dessie and Kombolcha, downplayed the success of those forces.

“There were black and white people who fought alongside TPLF forces and died in the fighting,” Abiy said, without providing further details or evidence.

Tigray forces say they have captured large swathes of territory from Ethiopian federal forces and are conducting a joint operation by the Oromo Liberation Army.
