The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the Taliban to exercise restraint in order to save lives in their takeover of Afghanistan.

Speaking in the UN Security Council, Antonio Guterres said he had heard reports of “severe human rights abuses” across the country.

“We are particularly concerned about human rights abuses against Afghan women and girls,” Guterres said.

“We cannot and should not leave the people of Afghanistan,” He added.

He called on the Assembly to use all means at its disposal to suppress the threat of international terrorism in Afghanistan and ensure the protection of human rights and said all countries were ready to accept Afghan refugees.
