The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says Kenya has informed the agency of its plans to close down the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps within a short period of time.

The UNHCR says the decision will affect refugees in Kenya at a time when the world is affected by the coronavirus global pandemic.

UNHCR further added that they would continue to discuss the matter with Kenyan authorities with urgency.

“UNHCR supports the Government of Kenya in particular in strengthening its ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis and respect the rights of refugees,” a statement from UNHCR said.
