A statement from Somalia’s disputed election commission said it was “regrettable” that an agreement had not been reached at the federal and state leaders’ meeting in Dhusamareb which culminated yesterday.

The commission’s case is one of three major points of contention that have led to disagreements over the September 17 election agreement.

The Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) deplores the disagreement at the conclusion of the Dhusamareeb conference but expresses optimism that the stalemate can still be resolved and calls on the parties not to give up and stand up for the responsibility of the country and implement the election agreement of 17 September 2020,” The statement from the disputed commission reads in part.

The statement further added that, “The Committee recommends to the Somali community that it is important at this time to work together to bring together the leadership of both the Federal Government and Member States. The committee urges clerics, traditional leaders and sections of the community to play their traditional role in resolving disputes through traditional means which has long been the official solution for Somalis”.

The committee thanked all parties involved in resolving the electoral dispute and commended the people and administration of Galmudug regional state for hosting the Dhusamareb 1 to 4 conferences and also thanked the international community for its support to Somalia.
