Reports from Garowe town, the provincial capital of Nugal region in central Somalia indicate that the use of the Somali shillings has been banned in the town.

Some traders said the reason for their refusal to use the currency was that the Puntland Bank had refused to exchange and operate the Somali Shilling which had a major impact on them.

Most of the commercial centers in Garowe market and the shops in the neighborhoods are not using Somali shillings today and said to be buying in dollars.

Poor people in Garowe have told the media that the rejection of the Somali shilling has had a major impact on them adding that they cannot afford to buy in dollars.
