Saudi court sentences women’s rights activist to 5 years in prison

A prominent Saudi woman who has campaigned for women’s rights has been sentenced to at least five years in prison.

Loujain al-Hathloul, 31, was jailed in a high-security prison in Saudi Arabia. Loujain and other women activists for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia has been jailed by the Saudi presidency in 2018, the women charged were said to be in a close contact with organizations hostile to Saudi Arabia.

International human rights groups have repeatedly called on Riyadh to release Loujian. But on Monday, the Saudi Criminal Court indicted her on a number of charges, including terrorism and disturbance to national security.

She was eventually sentenced to 5 years and 8 months in prison.
