Press release from the council of presidential candidates of Somalia has expressed concern about the decision of the Somali federal government on foreign policy in the wake of a diplomatic row between Kenya and Somalia.
“The Council of Candidates is deeply concerned about the decisions of the outgoing Government on important issues affecting the national interest and the people of Somalia,” the statement said.
The statement further said that the Council views the government’s decision to reduce ties with Kenya as an election campaign that is not in the interest of the nation and the people of Somalia.
“The council warns the president against using the country’s foreign policy for election campaigns and to create animosity between the two neighboring countries, Somalia and Kenya,” the statement said.
The Somali government said on Sunday night it has recalled its ambassador to Kenya Mohamud Ahmed Nur Tarsan, citing political and economic meddling in an apparent diplomatic spat between the two neighboring countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has also ordered the Kenyan ambassador to Somalia Lucas Tumbo to return to Nairobi for consultations.
Somalia accused Kenya of putting a lot of pressure on the Jubbaland president Ahmed Islam Mohamed to implement its political and economic interests, thus undermining Somalia’s recently struck political agreement in violation of diplomatic practices.
