SOMALI WOMEN STUDIES CENTRE LAUNCHES BOOKLET THAT ORIENTS SOMALI WOMEN WITH POLITICS

The Somali Women’s Studies Center (SWSC) on Tuesday launched a booklet designed specifically for Somali women parliamentarians at the federal and regional levels in Somalia.

The forum which was launched in Kismayu, the Jubbaland regional state of Somalia was attended by various officials including the Speaker of the Jubaland Parliament, Cultural and members of civil society as well as a host of women who are currently aspiring to be part of the new government that is expected to be formed by the President of Jubaland, Ahmed Madobe.

Jubbaland leader Ugas Omar Hirey and the Director General of the Ministry of women affairs and Human Rights in Jubaland Mr. Mohamed Hussein Mohamed both stressed the importance of orienting women with political ambitions.

The Chairman of the Jubaland Parliamentary Committee on social affairs Dr. Shire Abdi Mohamed welcomed the handbook,noting that it strengthens the role and responsibilities of Parliamentary women in Somalia as a whole.

The Newly sworn in Jubbaland Member of Parliament Faduma Farah Aden said the booklet would aid tremendously on women affairs. She further said that the SWSC group helped her gain a seat in the House of the People, a seat that was at the centre of a year-long dispute between her clan and the Jubbaland parliament.

The second deputy speaker of the Jubbaland parliament Abdi Baaleey Hussein who launched the program praised the SWSC for its good work and advised women to read the notes.

The Somali Women Studies Center has been building the leadership capacity of Somali women since its inception.

More than 30 women who have benefited from the Agency’s training have now become members of the Federal Parliament and State Governments.
