Locust infestation in Middle Shabelle region wreaks havoc

Locusts have infested areas under the control of Jowhar, the capital of Hir-Shabelle region and Mahaday district destroying crops and plantations.

Farmers in Middle Shabelle region said that locusts have caused a lot of damage to their crops and have been seen in most villages in Jowhar town and Mahaday district.

The farmers said that many farms have been affected and efforts to prevent it have been fruitless and have called on government officials and the Hir-Shabelle administration to address the issue with urgency.

In some areas of southern and central Somalia, locusts have infested several and large acres of crops plantations wreaking havoc.

Several Somali states have been unable to tackle the locust menace and have called on the international organizations to intervene.
